ARTIST BIO

Richard Holt studied painting at RMIT. He was co-founder and coordinator of the artist run spaces Platform and Platform2 and the zine store Sticky, and has worked for many years in arts development roles at a local government and community level. Early in his career he held solo exhibitions at West Space, Gertrude Street, Linden, CCP and ParaSite (Hong Kong), before shifting his focus to public space interventions and performative practices. During this time he created three iterations of the video series, Flashing the Square, for the Federation Square Screen, screening alongside the Melbourne Writers Festival, and produced large scale text installations, including for Newcastle Writers Festival and ArtSpace, Ringwood. When COVID hit he returned to painting and drawing as his primary medium. The series Tangle, was exhibited at Library at the Dock, Melbourne in 2023, and explored the enclosed landscape through large drawings made on site in forest locations around the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Ranges and Central Victoria. Wood for the Trees, exhibited at & Gallery Sorrento in 2024, continued this exploration. He continues to explore environmental themes with an emphasis on remnant forest locations. He is also an author and poet, and a member of the StoryDrop Collective of Sydney publisher, Spineless Wonders, publishing Australian micro-literature in off-the-page formats.
